Comet email through Gmail

Has anyone had success sending email through Google's mail server?
Here's my ini file:

SERVER=smtp.gmail.com 587
USER=@gmail.com
PASSWORD=

I cannot get a plain text message to email. My commands are sending, but when I close the lun, I'm getting an error saying "530 5.7.0 Must issue a STARTTLS command first. e65sm10518535yhl.2 - gsmtp
