The Latest & Greatest also gate the NTVDM error.

After ready still more Google posts, I found one barely related that mentioned that NTVDM did not like Remote Desktop because of the way it switch to full dos screen during installs.

I was using VNC which is probably close enough to RDP. I am not in the same building.

So I walked over and tried install of 5.08 from Console and it worked first time.

Mystery solved - crappy Friday - I wanna go home now.
