this was the classic "Star Wars"/Obi Wan Kanobi/"off by one" bug

the input argument was SUBstringed.... my count was off by one... so it picked up the first byte of the next field... defeating all ministrations of SearchFile to find it.... and, as we say in the old... OLD country..... Ludi Incipiant (let the games begin :)
