Saw "AdAware" from lavasoft mentioned in a Microsoft newletter. They have a "free" download for "non-commerical" use. lavasoftusa.com on their downloads page. Download actually comes from download.com. Might a search there as most of those free/shareware packages are vetted.
A Google search of "adware remover" turned up a couple of free scanners. Can't recommended them as I don't know the companies.
