If CPU usage climbs very high, can you identify the process(es) hogging the CPU ? Is Comet Server the only thing running on that VM ?
The VirtIO is to address Network sluggishness not CPU hogging. Comet uses lots of smaller packets, so latency plays a major role in performance.
Good caching disk controller is a must. Better the cache, better the performance. I cheated on my last Comet server, I put the Comet critical data on a enterprise level 400GB SSD (solid state drive). The non-mission critical data (spool, logs, history) is on a terabyte drive. Performance is excelent !!
As for Comet on a Cloud, sorry to say i am no expert...
Only unexplained high CPU I seen on my VMs, was with a Ubuntu (Linux) server running MySQL. Not a really busy machine but after 2-3 weeks, CPU usage stayed high. Rebuild the VM on a better hardware platform with more memory and it works fine now.
Each file can be a maximum of 1MB in length Uploaded files will be purged from the server on a regular basis.
