dynamic variable

I'm reading a MySQL table with a variable defined as 'text'. I defined a variable in a comet use file as dynamic to coincide with the text variable. The text field in the table is larger than 256 bytes but the dynamic variable in comet will only take the first 256 bytes of MySQL text field. I thought the dynamic variable would hold the entire text field. Can someone explain to me how I can read in these large MySQL text fields?
