IBM used to have a set of standard codes used for both specifying input/output of dates (where the format determined the delimiter... I think there was some talk about making the last character such as the zero below indicate an override delimiter... I think zero was the only one implemented):

*MDY MM/DD/YY
*DMY DD.MM.YY
*YMD YY-MM-DD
*USA MM/DD/YYYY
*EUR DD.MM.YYYY
*ISO YYYY-MM-DD
*JUL YY-DDD
*LONGJUL YYYY-DDD

*MDY0 MMDDYY
*DMY0 DDMMYY
*YMD0 YYMMDD
*USA0 MMDDYYYY
*EUR0 DDMMYYYY
*ISO0 YYYYMMDD
*JUL0 YYDDD
*LONGJUL0 YYYYDDD
