Customer called this morning. He had installed Win98se Upgrade on the CometAnywhere host and he had lost his connection to his network.

I drive over and double checked all the settings. Everything looked OK. So, I deleted the NIC from Device Manager and rebooted. The PC is a P/120 and originally Win95. So, the NIC (ISA) wasn't discovered by P&P. The Win98se device search found the NE2000 NIC and ask for the Win98se CD. After working fine the day before, the CD (1X) was now INOP too.

We opened the cabinet and pulled the NIC. After the reboot the CD was still INOP even though it showed in Device Manger as functional. Luckily, there was a "dead" PC around and we moved the CD (52X)and NIC (PCI) to the CAW host PC. Several reboots, and a driver download later everything was working again.

Why? Maybe it's a coincidence, but yesterday, 8/5/04, was the PC's 8th birthday. There was a sticker on mother board that was dated 8/5/96.

Have a nice weekend :)
