I installed the latest Comet Server Products and Comet 2018 versions on a clean install of Windows Server 2016 Essentials today. With just one minor workaround, things appear to be functioning without incident.
When I tried to start cometservices, I was greeted with a mfc90.dll is missing error message. It was looking for the file in the same folder as the install (in my case, c:\comet services). I copied the file from c:\windows\syswow64 to c:\comet services, and all worked well.
I copied over my comet structure from my existing server to the new Windows 2016 server, moved the usb dongle, and both Comet Services and Comet launched without incident.
Barb: To answer your question, it does indeed advertise as Windows Server 2012. The exact line says "Windows System Version: Microsoft 2012 ServerVersion 6.2 (Build 9200)"
