You're correct. I was temporarily confused because the output is different depending on whether anything prints afterwards. So A$='HELLO ' B$='THERE ' PRINTS 'HELLO THERE', and the 'there' part has no spaces after it. I've always used the (BM) mnemonic at the end of formatted prints so it would print 'HELLO THERE '.
