the reason I was looking for a colour table will be evident in the following page from the wiki

1) seems like COMET properly used a field that resulted from CLEAR LOCAL which had @00@
2) if you look at the above webpage, the chart has a little byte out of it at @00@
3) if you pass @00@ to HEXASC it return s " " ("@20@) instead of 00

so, it seams that
1) the COMET screen process was correct... @00@ => Black on Black
2) the little byte out of the corner in the webpage is how HTML handles it
3) the confusion occured because I took HEXASC at its word and was stymied (neither first/last time)

hope this is concise, and, happily, doesn't require a program

any and all advice would be welcomed!
