if I add secondary keys, must I re-compile existing programs?

a clarification:
If I add 4 keys to an existing file, why should I have to re-compile any existing programs, which don't "know" about the new indices?

I figure that since existing [programs don't open any of the new indices... there'll be no problem

I'll double check that no fields are moved around... that \would surely require a re-comp;ile because of the change of the layout of the .INC
