After trying a number of different things, we may have arrived at a solution. Suspecting that possibly something was corrupt, we created a new domain admin account, and logged into the server using that account. Since doing this, we've had 2 straight error free days. I'm cautiously optimistic that this resolved the error 29 and remote compile problems.
