We do use common variables, as you know, to pass the application programs information developed by the menu -- printer name, company name, create disk, start and ending record id, etc.
For security a record keyed by terminal id is stored in a unique file. The system uses to password to retrieve the user's security level and compares that to the security level associated with the program.
Remember the key to all this is that our menu is fundamentally a database (file). Each menu entry is a record that contains lots of stuff:
Description as it appears on the menu screen
Actual executable (Can be QREPORTS for example)
Common to be passed to executable (as in $CLI)
Is a printer used?
Security level
Program limited to a certain range of terminals?
Background? (Yuck, yuck, yuck)
Ask operator for Start and End?
