Compiler problem

I work for Kumquat Inc and I've had this problem a few times.
In the code I mistakenly entered this statement:
DATAX$=DATAX$++BLNBR$+'856'+SUB(BLNK30$,1,3)

The program compiled with no errors, but when I ran the program I got an error #91 Invalid/unsupported system call. After placing stops in the program I finally saw the mistake - the '++' in the statement. Why doesn't the compiler pick up on this error.

We are running Comet 2004 Build .337/04.05.
