The .d00 file must be in the same dir as the actual data file. Linked files do not have to be on the same dir as the primary file. When a link is done, it goes thru your dabs (in order) and looks for a .d00 for the secondary file. It will use the first one it finds that matches that name.
You can have multiple .d00 files with the same name in different dirs but if they are the destination of a link you'd have to make sure your dab order was such that it would find the correct one when resolving the USING.
