I have been reading, and maintaining, code that we wrote in the late 1980's and early 90's. And I am rolling on the floor in hysterics - alternately laughing and crying. We surely wrote some terrible code back then.
Of course, we did not know what we were doing, the language was primitive, the hardware was constraining and there was always *EDIT ...
I recently learned of an antidote to the depression caused by reading old code and I recommend taking a few moments to check out www.thedailywtf.com.
You may not be familiar with the languages of the samples on the site, but you will likely understand enough to say WTF. Its nice to know that people are still writing some truly awful code.
