It looks like my HTML page was a tid bit too big (27K vs the maximum allowed of 16K). That somehow overflowed the buffer and cloberred something in the task header that caused Comet to crash with a GPF when trying to do a subsequent ENTER.
Jim also pointed to the SEND command (instead of MERGE) to load a large chunk of my HTML page that was actually javascript stuff (tables and macros). He also told me about the "dot" option when using MERGE with SECTIONs (see Lesson 12 and 13 in XAP tutorial - The documentation mentions a file size limit of 64K for MERGE but forgets to mention the 16K limitation for individual section.
Not only it fixed the crash problem, but now my very complex page loads much faster.
