Oh well :) I think I have a work around. Serendipitiously, I happened on one of your early examples that changed the dialog color. If I set my wall paper and the dialog color using the same RGB I get the same effect as transparent. More code in the individual programs but it might give me a useful feature.
Many of my customers are reluctant to give up their DOS colors. They have color coded their sessions and brains for particular tasks and or printers. Using the above, I can color code their sessions. Some thing a bit more pastel, I hope.
