ADJUSTR and ADJUSTL

I " might" be " losing" my " marbles" but ADJUSTR is not working for me anymore? I am on C2K4.354.

LENGTH 9 & LOCAL BEG$,END$,BEG1$,END1$

BEG1$ = STRIP(BEG$)
END1$ = STRIP(END$)
BEG$ = ADJUSTR(BEG1$)
END$ = ADJUSTR(END1$)

Any help with this?
