When to do a Workstation Install

We serve our Comet application from an application server. When we do an update on a version we do a full installation to the server directory, but don't update the client PC's. Only if there is an update to the 'dll's do we need to a workstation install (minimal amount of files in the install shield).

How do I know if I need to do a workstation install for a version?

Can we just do something in the version naming convention of the that would indicate new client dll's are included and must be registered?

I would suggest a jump in major version release when it is required.

i.e. Comet2005Worksation359.exe would jump to CometWorkstation400.exe if we needed to install at the workstation level not just the application server level. Thoughts, comments?
