No we do not shutdown for backups and is left running all the time. We rely on XAP a lot for our website.
Also, when we shutdown, the workstations do not shutdown as gracefully as when the Novell server was installed. For the typical user a reboot is required to clear cFam, etc. On the old Novell, it was a security violation nag box and OK and you could start Comet again, so it's just easier to leave it running.
