You are so right. The way I did it, was this...
If a comet node was configured with a type 4 (xap) gateway, when Comet started up, it would ask the security server for an xap license. If it did not get the license, it would revert to the limited xap.
This way the first node to launch got the real xap license. If this was not the xap server, well... tough luck for it.
My mistake...;-(
Starting with Comet 2006 build 362 the free XAP (XAP lite if you will) must be configured with its own gateway type -- type 8.
Here is a piece of my ini file:
[GATEWAYS]
Gateway = 2,0; sort
Gateway = 2,0; sort
Gateway = 3,0; ws gateway
Gateway = 8,0; free xap
