Keys are composed of contiguous areas of the record. They may overlay a field, overlay part of a field, or overlay several fields.

If you are talking about the #files not exactly describing the real file record, that is a different matter.

I sure hope you are not asking for the file system to somehow respect the repugnant technique of making a file contain multiple record layouts. I would NEVER code that way, and I hope you don't either.

Barbara is working on a program that, for a given format statement, will produce a table of fields and their locations.
