I do know if you really want to connect to a credit card machine, but I know that you can with Comet (and some third party softwares) connect to a Credit Card Clearing House. One of my clients been doing pre-authorisation from within Comet for over 12 years now. We just completed an overhaul that got rid of the 9600bps modems for the easier and faster Internet connection.
There's a collection of providers in the US (see NACHA.org - The Electronic Payments Association aka National Automated Clearing House Association). There are also some in Canada.
Most of my experience is with batches but I know that ISPs and websites do it one at the time.
