I'll save you the trouble. I tried this example using CometServe32 as well as an all type "L" configuration (no file server). They all work exactly as you say.

The KEY info is returned by Comet regardless of whether you are using any file server or not. It has specific code in it to return the null string in the event of any error.

On the PREV side of things, in the file server there is specific code to save the current key value before the PREV is attempted and to restore that if any error occurs.

So... looks like this behavior is intentional. Perhaps you could add one line of code to your ExcpRet routine that says:
if EXCP = 2 XKEY$ = ""
