..doesn't that equate to hard coding your email address/password in the program? Sounds like it'd be a real pain when the password changes.

Perhaps worse -- unless you write in your own encryption in the program, the data can be retrieved easily by using "strings". ( a standard Unix program; ported to Windows here: http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Strings.htm )

Sounds like "security through obscurity" to me.
