Marc is correct for legacy files. The extended keyed files have the delete indicator in the 9th byte. In both cases the information in the bytes preceding the indicator are also used to store deleted record information. Therefore, if you think you might ever need to restore deleted records, it would be wise to not place your key fields at the beginning of the record. Extended keyed files use a total of 10 bytes for the delete chain information.
