Your confusion is due to a misunderstanding of the terminology. You asked about extended keyed files. These were introduced with Comet 2005. That's when we extended the maximum key size to 254. The key may span multiple fields in the record, but they must be contiguous.

Then, coincidentally with Comet 2006 we introduced multi-keyed files. Now you can have more than one key for each record. Each individual key is always comprised of contiguous bytes in the record. But now you may have more than one key. Each key may be located wherever you like in the record.

So, yes, you can do what you would like to do. Here's a link to the multi-keyed doc. Hope that clears it up for you.
