in a regular keyed file, if a key is deleted the key comes out of the key tree and the first X number of bytes of the record is overwritten with special characters ( first 7 bytes? ). If records were deleted in error, and the file has not been copied out or condensed, then you could Q option 13 remove the QDIR entry and re-enter with the same record length as a sequential file. You could keybild from the sequential file and retrieve data from the deleted records, though of course not from those first overwritten bytes.
Typically key field info started in position zero of the record. My
thought was to simply not use those first number of bytes in the record. That way the entire record could be retrieved in a keybild.
The only question I have is - Is there a way to accomplish this with
Extended Keyed files? Under Comet Explorer could there be a way to
keybild an Extended Keyed file by processing records as opposed to keys and perhaps with a question that says "Process Deleted Records? (Y/N)". Tom.
