There are Barcode scanners available with USB interfaces/connections. (google: barcode usb) If this route is taken, make sure to get one that works directly with Windows. (Some require their own special program)
If the current scanner has a PS2 connection, there are USB/PS2 adapters that allow connection of PS2 keyboards to notebooks. One of these may work the scanner.
The caveat with either method that works directly with Windows, is that the system will have two keyboard inputs. If the notebook keyboard is pressed at the same time a scan is done, it may be possible that the keyboard data will get intermixed with the scanned data.
Note: Have not used either solution with Comet.
