Louisa - this has been an issue for a long time with cometanywhere. If a program uses an LPx on the cometanywhere host machine, anyone else on that host would get an error trying to open LPx. I've resolved in the past by configuring a series of printers for the cometanywhere host and using the ,E,LP... option in the printers. I usually set up 4 or 5 additional printers.
