Interesting. Did you notice that although you apparently wanted to connect to port 25 you connected to port 6400?
CONNECT smtp1.sympatico.ca 25
+OK Connect 209.226.175.63 on port 6400
I'd check that out. Maybe you should compare this log to the one from the SENDMAIL method.
