I agree with all your comments 100%.
For clients that are not running a Domain, there is a problem as the workstations do not sync.
Though with some manual editing of the registry, it looks like it might be possible to get them to sync to another system. This is the "work" I mentioned in the first post that I was hoping to avoid.
