I've had trouble in the past dealing with leading zeros when exporting to an excel file. I've found out the following trick:
1. Open the file in excel.
2. Highlight the column in question
3. Click on FORMAT, click CELLS, and click the NUMBER tab.
4. In the category list, click on CUSTOM.
5. In the TYPE box, enter a zero for each character in the field - ie. if you have a 6 digit customer number and you are seeing less that 6 digits, type 000000.
6. (optional) - say TA DA. It will work without this step.
