garbage printing at top of page

I have a cheque printing program at one client that prints a few characters of garbage text at the top of the form. Doesn't matter which printer (old line printer or HP laser) they get the same junk (Z.75 XXX) only at the top of the first page. Any suggestions where to look to solve this problem?
