for what you're likely doing, you don't need a server or anything complicated: use "TortoiseSVN". (http://sourceforge.net/projects/tortoisesvn).

basically, you create a data folder [somewhere], and use the tortoise explorer interface to checkin/checkout code. it doesn't even care if it's not code -- i've been using it to keep revisions of an access database. it diff's the current revision against the previous one, stores only the differences to save space.. etc.

anyhow. i can't stress how easy it is. give it 20 minutes; it's a easy, and worth every penny.
