I did a little research.
I SEARCHED one source directory looking for OPENs and got a 168 page listing in LPH. Then I went looking for Opens with a DIR= attached. I found less than 100. Not a scientific analysis, but assuming I had 40 opens on a page that's 6800 open statements with about 100 using DIR=.
The Directory statement in the Data Dictionary must not be required.
