Jim is not wrong about having the data definition be part of the "system". All other databases make you do this, but all other databases have utilities to allow you to keep these in sync.

When I work in my Oracle database I have the ability to "apply" the scheema, this creates all the tables and definitions. If a file layout changes you do not have to re-compile the application since the system uses SQL to get at the data and the database is aware of the data.

Short of having all the tools that would be required to manage multiple data definition files (d00's) across the enterprise, I would vote to keep it in one place. The other option is to do just what we do in the current system, first try to open the .d00 in the specified directory, then just do a blanket open to find one on the DAB provided in Access order.
