IPv6

At a Microsoft seminar yesterday, the presenter brought up the subject of IPv6. Lots of good stuff like speed, expanded IP addresses (a few billion for every living person), self tuning, and IP Security is built in. A topic for Las Vegas would be the implementation of IPv6 in Comet.

IPv6 is the default for Vista. If it can't find an IPv6 connection it then tries IPv4. Vista to Vista and Vista to Server 2008 (Longhorn) connections are much faster and can be made more secure.

Large parts of Asia are already IPv6. The Feds have a target date of 2008 for completing their IPv6 implementation.

Caveats.

Vista to XP and Vista to Server 2003 work but may have some glitches because the old "IP stack" just isn't reworkable. Apparently, there may not be a 100% perfect retrofit for XP and Server 2003.

There have been early reports from major corporations that IPv6 may be too fast for their "Line of Business" apps.

The presenter sort of suggested waiting for Vista SP1 before implementing IPv6.

Maybe Microsoft has been slipping in some IPv4 changes. If so, could these be related to the some of the recent Comet Server connection problems posted here?
