I have one mystery customer on Server 2000 where CometServer will not work as a service. Lots of different symptoms over the years. Usually, one exe doesn't start or the Comet workstations get errors and can't connect. Upgraded to the USB dongle with no change. Lots of uninstalls and reinstalls :(
The solution is to set CometServices to disabled and have the four exe's as shortcuts on the desktop in CometNTService.INI order and launch them manually.
Upgrades are done by closing the consoles, using Task Manager to kill the other Comet pieces, do the install, don't do the reboot, and launch the exe's manually. I usually keep task Manager open so I can see each exe display before starting the next exe.
Don't put the shortcuts in the StartUp folder. They may not launch in the right order.
Corporate keeps promising a new server.
