My experience is that if ltype$ is greater than 2 bytes, then the pos results are if-fy. I've just gotten into the habit of doing a pos(strip(ltype$),'FA*VL') if there is a difference in the lengths of the field. But I do use this in almost every program I write. I am on the current 2008.
