Which version of the Server Products are you running? This sounds a lot like a problem that we tracked down a couple of months ago. There were problems with files belonging to disconnected users from getting left open. If you're not on the 8.02 Server Products release I'd give it a try.

The only way I know to release these files is to restart the server.
