You seem to be the only one who has customers that need static IP addresses. I do not know why, but we ALWAYS run with DHCP/"obtain an ip address automatically".

This is NOT a Comet Problem.

We can help if you tell us about the DHCP server the customer is using. Is there a network guy we can talk to? Depending on the DHCP server we can configure such that this would not be a problem. Usually the default DHCP lease parameters are sufficient to make Comet apps run just fine.
