Louisa - the way I deal with invoices remotely, is that I have a standalone version of comet running at the remote site with a program running on it that looks in a folder (designated by an alias) for the presence of a text file. If a text file is found, then the standalone program generates the invoice with the info contained in the text file. I can envision a similar thing with your pole display. You can send a small text file to the remote machine. The standalone program could then display the information in this text file to the pole device.
