Keith, about time you pulled your head out of the sand. Any NEW form printing applications all get a PDF output; with a side order of email if desired. I just finished rolling out a new billing system and it's all done electronically (ok they still have the option to print it) and invoices get emailed to clients.
Oh yes, the credit card, PAP idea has been around for years - like probably ten here. A client was taking FOUR days to process 800 credit card slips manually. Then, doing the cash receipts job. Now they do Visa, AMEX, Mastercard, Checking accounts (three or four times that volume) in fifteen minutes. This isn't a comet installation, but wouldn't be hard to do.
Here's an overview of the automated billing I did:
At invoice time, check customer master for PAP details, if found, don't print invoice (great time to email here), but send billing information to a flat file. Allow user to review/maintain flat file. At bank submission time, build the bank file (in the bank format - banks in Canada have specs for this processing). Submit file to bank and wait for email that it's been done. When bank as processed it, take same flat file and push it into an automated cash receipts program (don't blink). Client likes the batch idea, but it could also be done interactively.
