I have a vague remembrance that the Q Report Generator didn't need self links. It put zeroes or blanks in fields it was supposed to get from the link. In the reporter you can use the failed link as an extra "SELECTING".
How about a second USING verb, like USINGSELF, that does a self link automatically.
USINGSELF C1A.TO.C1B would be the equavalent of USING C1A.TO.C1B;C1A.TO.C1A.
I've never looked to be sure, but I'm guessing that the C1A.TO.C1A does an extra READ of the C1A record.
