Jon, Jim and Grant are not entirely on the same page. Jim says the variable, with its comma, is defined as string because it has double quotes. Jon is talking about NUMERICs (no quotes) that contain commas and/or dollar signs (Euros, Yen, Yuan?) and he wants Comet to treat this data as valid numeric datz even though the sender says it's numeric and enclosed it in quotes. Grant wants to read this field, quoited according to industry standard, into a numeric variable.

I am lost about what Jim wants to do, what Grant thinks Comet should do, what Jon thinks comet should do.

In my mind if the field is surrounded by double quotes you should not be reading it into a numeric variable. Period. If it really is a number, import it into a string and NUM it.
