We do your "other option". Our servers have comet workstation session running on them for "admin" purposes.
In the background sessions we have some programs running tasks. (mainly a comet program to shut the session down for backup)
We also have a comet program stating in foreground that transfers files, every so often, from Comet to Windows World and vica versa.
We went with foreground as some of the mnemonics (i.e. copyfile), work only in foreground.
(It is also nice to have a "console" screen to check the programs activity.)
I have a windows scheduled task to start the session in the early morning after backup completes.
The program gets started when the comet session starts by qstart2.
It checks for files, transfers any found, pauses for a bit, then repeats.
Each file can be a maximum of 1MB in length Uploaded files will be purged from the server on a regular basis.
