I'm sure they'll release a Win7 equivalent soon but Microsoft did release an "advisor" software which [when installed on XP] tells you roughly what the system lacks or has driver problems with. It's not fullproof but it's a start. Any system software [i.e. anti-virus, registry tools, defragmenter] will most likely require the latest version. It's really up to the hardware manufacturers to provide drivers - either included within Win7 or after on their web site. The older the hardware, the less chances that drivers will be available.
